Australian MG4 Essence 64 & 77 2023 – how much luggage and shopping fits in the boot and frunk?

If you’re wondering how much boot and frunk storage space the Australian MG4 Essence 64 and 77 (2023 model) has, it’s listed as 350 litres cargo capacity with seats up.

As a hatchback there is plenty of space to access the boot once the boot lid is lifted. This is manual, it is not powered

There should be a small bag with the MG home charging cable inside.

Unfortunately at the lower boot floor position (see video at end how to adjust) there’s nowhere to stash it in the boot to stop it slipping around so I kept it behind the driver’s seat.

The frunk doesn’t exist unfortunately so you can’t store anything under the front bonnet.

Overall this is very similar to the MG4’s main competitor the BYD Dolphin, which has 345 litres boot space and no frunk. see my photo comparison of both cars.

With back seats folded down the boot capacity is 1165 litres, though as you can see there is a bump halfway so it’s not completely flat. See video at end for how to remove the bump.

The back seats can be pushed down either side or both as a 60/40 split.

Underneath the boot floor there is no extra space to store anything next to the emergency sign, tire goo etc.

Note the boot floor is adjustable height in the Essence spec, see how to video below.

On either side of the boot there are small netted storage areas.

There is no cigarette lighter socket in the boot or hooks to use a cargo net.

The little grey square cut out on the left hand side is where you can access the emergency charging port release mechanism.

As a hatchback there is not the same amount of space as a larger SUV or crossover electric car.

Nevertheless I managed to fit in the test luggage listed below without blocking the rear vision:

  • 1 x bag on top with my 7m Type 2 to Type 2 cable
  • 2 x medium sized suitcases
  • 1 x carry on luggage
  • 1 x backpack

The 2nd carry on luggage and 2nd backpack had to be placed in the back seat.

Thanks to the rear privacy glass no one can see what is in your boot.

Watch the videos below to see how you can adjust the boot floor to store cables below (Essence only) and take out the floor spacer to make the full boot with seats lying flat easier to use.
