Alex has owned an MG4 Essence 64 for two years, racking up plenty of kilometres between far north coast NSW and Sydney. In this video, he gives an unfiltered account of life with the car: the good and the frustrating as well as how they became a two-car household after adding a MG ZS EV for his wife.
On the money side, the picture is remarkable. Between solar charging at home and virtually never paying for grid power, Alex calculates his household is saving around $6,500 a year compared to their old fuel and grid energy costs. He expects his entire home energy system to pay for itself in roughly five years. Their power bill? Effectively zero.
But it hasn’t all been smooth driving. Alex describes months of the MG4’s lane keeping assist dragging him toward oncoming trucks and buses on country roads, software he had to manually disable every single time he started the car.
He had to wait a full two years for a scheduled service before MG fixed this and even then the infotainment software wasn’t fully updated. He can’t even get a straight answer on what it would cost to finish the job and get all the car software modules updated.
The conversation broadens into a sharp critique of MG Australia’s post-purchase support and the risks for MG4 second-hand as well as dealer demo buyers who may unknowingly have unpatched cars.
Despite the frustrations, Alex’s verdict is clear: the MG4 is a seriously fun car to drive and a genuinely cheap one to run. He just wishes MG had treated its buyers better after sales.
