Sydney to Melbourne EV Christmas Roadtrip 4 Years In A Row. Here’s What’s Changed

Over four consecutive electric car Christmas road trips between Sydney and Melbourne, I’ve experienced EV road tripping transform from a nerve-wracking exercise in range anxiety into something genuinely effortless.

My first trip in an MG ZS EV (second gen, standard range) was a frustrating and slow experience. Roughly 250km of real-world highway range and sparse slow 50kW chargers. My advice from that era: don’t attempt a long interstate trip in anything under 400km WLTP range, ideally 500km +.

Year two in a Kia EV6 GT-Line was a massive leap. Better range, more chargers and Tesla’s network opening up to non-Tesla cars.

I also flag a critical buying tip here: 800-volt platform cars (like the EV6, Ioniq 5, Zeekr 7X) charge well below their rated speed on Australian Tesla Superchargers, which are all 400V.

Year three in my own MG4 77 Long Range was near-stress-free: two stops (Yass and Albury) done.

Year four in the 600km WLTP range Kia EV3 Air Long Range was even simpler.

We stopped wherever we felt like it, and the car often topped up faster than we could finish a break.

By the end of 2026, with 500-700km WLTP range electric cars becoming more common, the only limit on this road trip route will be your bladder.
