I’ve spent a week with a media review loan BYD Atto 2 around Sydney, and here’s the thing. it’s a genuinely pleasant car. Efficient, comfortable, great screen, no annoying driver attention beeping. I didn’t dislike driving it at all.
However I don’t review cars in isolation. I review them against what else is sitting at the same price point right now. And that’s where things get complicated for BYD.
In the video I put the Atto 2 Premium head-to-head against the Jaecoo J5 EV, a newer, less-established brand with a lot to prove. The specs comparison threw up some results that genuinely surprised me. We’re talking range, boot space, charging speed, warranty coverage, and price and the scorecard doesn’t go the way you might expect from one of Australia’s most recognised EV brands.
There’s also a wildcard feature that might be a dealbreaker for some buyers. One car has it, the other doesn’t and it’s the kind of feature that’s easy to take for granted until it’s gone.
