Australian MG4 top spec 64kWh Essence $47990 plus on-roads

Preorders for the much anticipated MG4 electric car will open in Australia on April 11 2023.

Initially only the top spec 64kWh Essence variant will be for sale for $47,990 plus on-road costs. At a later date two other  variants will be available at a lower cost.

The MG4 was revealed to the Australian motoring media and electric vehicle enthusiasts at the recent Fully Charged Live Sydney conference which I attended.

Essence features include a two-tone roof, twin aero rear spoiler, 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging pad, MG Pilot advanced driver assistance system (Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)), automatic LED headlights and rear lights, rear parking sensors, 18’’ alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control and MG iSmart app connectivity.

Full specifications for the MG4 Essence are not available yet, this is what we know so far:

  • Five-star Euro NCAP score awarded to the entire current MG4 model UK range. Australian ANCAP rating yet to be determined.
  • standard equipment for all Australian MG4 variants includes: LED headlights and 10.25-inch infotainment system.
  • MG4 is the first pure EV Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) car available from MG Motor in Australia and New Zealand.
  • 150kW of power, 50:50 weight distribution, rear-wheel drive configuration
  • low centre of gravity in synch with the battery design and placement. WLTP range of up to 435km on a single charge.
  • 64kWh battery is capable of charging up at a peak rate of 135kW.

I look forward to test driving the MG4 in real world suburban and road trip conditions to let you know what the experience is like.
