Many car reviewers say that the MG4 77 is just a city car and you can’t really drive it outside of Sydney or any other big city because it’ll run out of battery or you’ll have to charge it lots of times.
They’re wrong. Just ignore them. Especially if you can charge at home from unused solar power and start off a holiday drive with a full battery.
In the video below I show how I drove my MG4 Long Range 77 model from the Western suburbs of Sydney (Holsworthy) to Foster-Tuncurry which is over 300km north of Sydney in my MG4 77 Long Range. My car has more than enough battery capacity to get to the cabin I booked in a nice river side caravan park without needing to public charge along the way at all.
I started off the trip with 100% battery because that’s one big advantage of electric cars over petrol ones. If you can charge at home (especially from excess home solar power) you can charge for free/really cheaply and start with a full tank.
We stopped at Wiseman’s Ferry for lunch at Triple Two Cafe. After 90km of driving to get out of Sydney and onto the Motorway the car battery was at 83%.
We got back on the road after the lunch stop which was delicious and arrived at Discovery Parks – Forster with about 36% of the battery remaining before enjoyed a lovely walk along the river before dinner.
If you listen to clickbait EV hating media sources you might think that you can’t drive several hundred kilometres from Sydney easily in an electric car but it was easy and as I showed in the video I could fill the car battery up again every day after visiting beaches just by plugging the car into the cabin (with permission from the staff).
I know a lot of people are scared about charging their battery to 100% but I do that overnight every night during a EV roadtrip holiday. It’s totally safe to do so if you’re going to use most of the battery the next day.
Most Caravan Park owners are okay to let you charge your car for free from a normal power socket outside the Cabin or for a fair price per night
Don’t worry and stress and only limit your battery to 80% meaning you have to public charge along the way. We drove all the way back home without needing public charging because the car battery started the return trip at 100%.
Ourimbah is a good place to stop north of Sydney with play equipment for the kids, toilets and lots of places to sit and eat.
For the return journey home I drove over 330 km from Foster-Tuncurry down the highway to Western Sydney, dropped off my family member then continued on the M5 Motorway to the suburb of Earlwood. Arriving with over a third of my battery left.
So it’s all good. If you want to buy the MG4 77 long range you know that you can drive out of the city and back without any problems.
Retirees are the perfect buyers for long range EVs because:
- They often have solar panels on their home roof
- So can charge their electric car for almost free to 100%
- Then go on longer EV day trips eg Marrickville Inner West Sydney to Kangaroo Valley
- Drive back again without needing to public charge at all.
