Seekbooks Review – Buy Cheap Books from an Australian Online Bookstore

I have bought quite a few books from the Australian discount online bookstore Seekbooks including: The Joy of Work: Dilbert’s Guide to Finding Happiness by Scott Adam, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett and What Color Is Your Parachute? By Richard Nelson Bolles.

Seekbooks maintain a database of over 1.2 million books from Australia, the US, and the UK all priced in Australian dollars at very competitive prices. They also have a Bargain Basement where all books are heavily discounted.

All the sites below use the Seekbooks product database, staff and fulfillment centre but charge their customers more or add another level of bureaucracy so why would you pay more money $$ to them for the same book when you can buy directly from Seekbooks and save money instead:

  • Angus & Robertson online
  • Leadingedgebooks online
  • Collins Books online
  • Boomerang Books online
  • BuyAustralian Bookstore online

All books listed at Seekbooks are taken from three major databases. Each database lists titles available from suppliers in that country (Australia, the US & the United Kingdom). You can tell which database a title came from by the flag to the left of the title. The search facility automatically looks in the Australian database, you may select one of the others from the menu at the bottom of the search screen. Books that have to be sourced from overseas are not all carried in stock & many have to be ordered in.

Expected delivery times are displayed when a title is selected. Generally, titles in stock in Australia are shipped within 3 – 7 days of order (depending on stock availability). A further 20 days should be added for US and UK titles.

Imported books are priced depending on the current exchange rate from the country of origin and include the cost of importation. Please note that the price of imported books bought in-store may vary slightly from the internet price due to currency variations between times of purchase. All prices are listed in Australian dollars. All orders are subject to price and availability confirmation. If prices change, Seekbooks will contact you prior to finalization of your order. Your credit card will not be charged until your order is shipped.

So next time:

  • You want to buy a new book, check out the Seekbooks bestselling Fiction/Non-Fiction/Children booklists
  • You need a gift for a bookish friend buy them a Seekbooks Gift voucher in $20, $30, or $50 denominations
  • You watch a movie and want to buy the book it was based on check out the Seekbooks in Movies category
  • You want to buy an award winning book like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon or A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby browse the Seekbooks Award Winners category
  • You only have a few dollars to spend browse the Seekbooks bargain section which contains books discounted up to 70% off. Note that bargain books have Extremely Limited availability (supplied “First come – First serve”) and may already be out of stock. Usually processed within 1 Working Day unless that specific book title has already run out in which case the order will be cancelled at no cost.

Overseas Book Stores

If Seekbooks doesn’t have the book I want than I usually try these 3 online bookstores from overseas as they have good customer service, pricing and shipping costs:

  1. bugger, I bought a book from Collins online the other day. If I’d have known I would have gone straight to the source

EDITOR: Not many people know that Collins online is merely a reseller. However it didn’t take me long to find out because all the book images on Collins online come from the Seekbooks site eg: http://images.seekbooks.com.au/0733316549.jpg !

  2. I just heard about Read St, a voluntary community support group operated by book lovers, book buyers and booksellers in Sydney Australia.

The site contains sixteen categories of quality pre-read paperbacks. All proceeds after costs are donated to Australian charities or community support groups. The development of this service depends on your support.

    Read Street’s mission statement is:-

    * To provide great books.
    * To encourage kids and grown ups to read.
    * To support Aussie health care organisations.
    * To aid poverty by supporting Aussie charities.
    * Postage & Handling is not charged on this site within Aust or Aust External Territories. Minimum order $16.00

To illustrate how cheap the 2nd hand books from Read Street are I did a search for books for sale by the prominent Fantasy writer Terry Pratchett, 7 books were for sale in the catalogue and they all cost between $3 and $4!!
