Future of manned space flight: a private frontier?

An article I wrote about the future of manned space flight was just published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Drum Unleashed website. It is definitely the freelance article I’m most proud of writing to date

Writing freelance articles for big media organisations is fun but it’s even better when you get a free hand to write about a topic that you’re really interested in, in this case the future of space travel and whether nation states will abandon serious investment in manned space flight and be replaced by private entrepreneurial projects.

The unexpected convergence of several space travel related events during the last few months has made me reconsider the potential future of the human race off-world.

As a youngster I obsessively read many of the classic space and exploration science fiction books by authors like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke and Jules Verne. Space is the final frontier for mankind, as less travelled a path as you can get.

Yet the future of manned space flight to the moon and beyond is far from certain, with world leaders like President Obama focused on urgent earthly issues such as kick starting the ailing US economy and the disastrous environmental impacts of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico …. continued at ABC The Drum Unleashed

March started with a flight to the 3 day Kickstart Forum held on the Gold Coast, bringing together over 50 of Australia’s leading IT journalists and IT vendors for a look at the year ahead.

And the month ended with an unexpected invitation from Tourism New Zealand/Tourism Dunedin and Canon Australia for a whirlwind week long photography tour of the southern part of New Zealand South Island hosted by Getaway TV presenter Jules Lund and professional kiwi photographer Clive Copeman

February was interesting because I got to visit “ABC Tardis 1″ for the first time.

TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space) is a time machine and spacecraft in the BBC sci-fi TV series Doctor Who.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) calls their recording studios for interviews between different ABC locations TARDIS, in homage to Dr Who
