Alternative Ad Blocking Method
You should only continue reading this if you have been unable to install Adextinguisher onto your computer yourself, and I have been unable to fix the installation problem you've told me about by email.
A hosts file is used by Windows to translate host names (eg: www.bhatt.id.au) to IP addresses (eg: 126.96.36.199).
IP addresses are numbers that mean the same thing as the words in web addresses. Computers use numbers to find a sites address, but people type words like www.bhatt.id.au so that they dont need to remember numbers with dots in between them when they want to visit a web site.
All computers have a host address of their own - it is known as the "localhost" address, with an IP address of 127.0.0.1 which a computer uses to refer to itself. If you associate another computer's host name with your localhost IP address, you have effectively blocked that host since all attempts to access it will lead back to you.
What a hosts file does is store the addresses of common computers on the internet which store ads shown on web pages and tells your web browser eg: Internet Explorer or Netscape that the ad is stored on your computer. That way, your computer will never go looking for the ad...which blocks that ad from appearing because the computer thinks it has already found the ad locally.
