Frequently Asked Questions

Adextinguisher isnt listed in "Add/Remove programs". How do I remove it?
1. Disable the HTTP proxy in your web browser
2. If running adextinguisher as a service (adextsvc.exe), stop it by executing "net stop adextsvc" from the windows command line.
3. Delete all files called adextinguisher.exe (Windows 95/98/ME) or adextsvc.exe (Windows 2000/XP/2003) on your hard disk.

Could you please add THIS NEW FEATURE to Adexinguisher?
Addition of new features by Adextinguishers original developer Mike Ingle has ceased. This software project is not likely to have any new releases. The blocking list may still be updated in the future.

How do I create my own Ad Blocking list? Can I use more than one list??
1. Make your own list instructions.
2. Yes, as many lists as you want eg: my list + yours + your friends. Tell me if you make a list of your own, perhaps I can include your rules in the main adextingusiher block.txt rules file.

Does Adextinguisher stop popup windows from opening new browser windows?
No, but Adextinguisher can block the large ad images inside popular popup windows eg: X10 or Tripod so the popup window that opens doesnt contain any images.

Will Adextinguisher work with my Cable/ADSL connection?
Yes. I put the proxy server settings in my Dial up networking proxy settings for my ADSL connection. However depending on the modem you use for your cable/adsl connection the proxy settings may have to be entered in a different place eg: the modems internal settings.

Adextinguisher sounds good. What is the cost?
Adextinguisher is completely FREE.

Do you have a mailing list that I can join?
There wouldnt be any point in doing that because this software project is not likely to have any new releases. The blocking list may still be updated in the future.

Help to Make Adextinguisher Work

If you're having problems making Adextinguisher work please follow the relevant instructions below to make it work.

The first few things you can do to make Adextinguisher work are..

Registry Editting
If you are confident enought to edit the Windows registry search for and delete all registry keys called Monkeywrench (there may be several of them), and than try and rerun the setup file adext.exe/adextsvc.exe to try and setup Adextinguisher again.

If your Browser is:

Internet Explorer 5/5.5/6 Help

Please follow these instructions below:

  1. Go to Start button-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Internet Options.

  2. Click on Connections tab.

  3. In the Dial-up Settings window, choose the connection you are using. Frequently there is only one listed.

  4. Click the Settings button to the right of the connection list.

  5. Check the box labeled Use a Proxy Server.

  6. Click the Advanced button to the right of the box you just checked.

  7. In the Proxy Settings: field, enter adext-localhost for the HTTP proxy.

  8. In the Port: field to the right of it, enter 8882 or whatever port you selected when you installed. 8882 is the default.

  9. Press OK (probably 3 times), and open your browser at a commercial website to see if ads are now blocked.

Netscape 3/4 Help

Please follow these instructions below:

  1. Run Netscape.

  2. Select Edit/Preferences from the Netscape menu.

  3. In the Category list, open the Advanced category.

  4. Select the Proxies entry under Advanced.

  5. In the dialog box, check Manual proxy configuration.

  6. Click the View button in the dialog box.

  7. In the HTTP proxy server field (right below Address of proxy server to use) enter: adext-localhost In the HTTP port field (right below Port) enter 8882 (or whatever port you entered when you installed Ad Extinguisher. 8882 is the default.)

  8. Click Ok in the Manual Proxy Configuration dialog.

  9. Click Ok in the Preferences dialog.

  10. Try to access http://ae.loc/config for the Ad Extinguisher control panel.

Netscape 6/Mozilla Help

Please follow these instructions below:
  1. Run Netscape 6/Mozilla.

  2. Select Edit/Preferences from the menu.

  3. Open the Advanced category.

  4. Select the Proxies entry under Advanced.

  5. In the dialog box, check Manual proxy configuration. In the HTTP proxy server field enter: adext-localhost

  6. In the HTTP port field enter: 8882

  7. Click Ok.

If Ad Extinguisher still doesnt work..

To Uninstall the program: Go to Start Menu, Control Panel, Settings, Add/Remove Programs and double-click on Ad Extinguisher 1.0

Go to the DMOZ collection of many other good ad blocking methods.
